My Custom 6.5 Grendel Upper from Templar Custom. A lot of folks asked me why i spent as much on a upper as i did on the Templar upper. Well, here are my reasons... Why 6.5 Grendel? I wanted to build a DMR style rifle with low recoil and a effective range up to 1000 yards.The Grendel stuck out of all options i looked at. Very flat shooting (flatter then 308 at 1000!!), low recoil, reloading components are readily availabe, great bullet selection. My break in load has been 31.7grains of CFE behind a 123gr A-MAX. This is a mid range load i was just going to use for the barrel break in and it consistently gave me 0.68 groups or less during barrel break in! It is also a very clan burning load. I am pretty sure, i can improve it further with some load testing. Why a 19.5" Barrel? 19.5" is the sweet spot for the 6.5 Grendel. You gain the most velocity up to 19.5". Longer barrel lengths would add more velocity (range) but the additional weight would not be worth it to me. I will post some more data next weekend. Why the MC-E Brake from Templar? The MC-E is very efficient in mitigating muzzle climb and felt recoil. The recoil during barrel break in felt like a 62gr 5.56 round. Why the 14" Race Rail? Number one is the weight. The rail is very light but sturdy. With the race rail and included barrel nut / tool you can remove the barrel without having to remove the gas tube. Why Templar Custom? I was looking for a small business that is 100% about the quality of their product and the custom aspect of a build. Mos companies order premade barrels and just assemble the upper for you. With Templar, you pick the exact barrel length, profile etc. Everything is just clean and smooth. No toolmarks anywhere. A few days after i received my upper, i received a call from Bob, the owner of Templar to make sure that everything is as expected. It is just great to get this type of personalized treatment. I am considering another build with Templar Custom this summer / fall.
